Fishing for Fish

Jeff Lowe: vocals, backing vocals, keys, guitar, recorder, bass, drums
Hannah Johnston: flute

Fishing for fish is based on John chapter 21 and retells the events of ‘the miraculous catch of fish’ and the reinstatement of Peter after his three times denial of Jesus. The denial is described in in chapter 18 of John and took place in the courts of the High Priest Caiaphas.

Jesus stood upon the beach,
He loved his friends the ones he’d come to teach.
But the time had drifted by, since the day they’d seen Him die
And now they wondered - why?
Can we really rely on God, or should we go back
Fishing for fish?

The boat was full they all were gathered in.
There was Peter and John and Thomas called the twin.
For fish they laboured all night long, relying on their nets.
As daylight dawned they worked no more.
Jesus stood upon the shore, says “Children how’ve you fared
Fishing for fish?”

Now they did not know with Jesus they were met.
They told him not a fish was in their nets.
He told them “Cast upon the right side, the fish are swimming in the tide.”
Soon their nets were full, there was much too much to pull.
“It’s the Lord,” John said
“He’s been fishing for fish.”

When Peter saw his Lord from death was free
He put on his clothes and sprung into the sea.
The disciples followed close at hand,
Pulling their nets right into land,
And there upon the sand
Sat Jesus by the fire
With some loaves and fish.

Come and bring some fish here that you’ve have caught.”
So Peter went and pulled the nets ashore.
There was a hundred and fifty three fish,
A miraculous catch of sea fish.
And though the catch was very rare,
The nets were none the worse for wear.
“Come and share my breakfast.
We’ve all been fishing for fish.”

“Peter do you love more these?”
“Yes Lord I love you more than these.”
“Then Peter feed my lambs, then Peter tend my lambs.
Then Peter feed my sheep,
I’ve work for you to do
Don’t spend your time just now
Fishing for fish.

Now all the books the world has could not hold,
All the things of Jesus that are told.
He told these men to follow him.
He told them just to trust in him
He says the same to you and me;
He died and lives to make us
If you follow me, I’ll make you fishers of men.
