Psalm 140: Rescue me

Rescue me, from wicked men;
All those devising evil in their hearts.
Protect me Lord, from violent men,
As they prepare for wars they plan to start.
Come and rescue me, from violent men,
For they will stir up war every day.
They make their tongues as sharp as snakes;
There's viper's poison in all they say.
Keep me from the wicked's hands,
Who plan to trip my feet up in a snare.
Protect me Lord, from violent men;
They set their traps and I am not aware.
Come and rescue me, from violent men,
Who in their pride hide snares to catch me.
They spread their cords and nets about;
They set my path with traps I don't see.
I say to you, “Lord, you're my God.”
Have mercy Lord and hear my cry to you.
O sovereign Lord, strong deliverer,
Who shields my head until the battle's through,
Come and rescue me, from violent men,
And don't let all their evil succeed,
For if you grant them what they wish,
In pride they'll lift up their evil deeds.
Let those whose heads encircle me,
Be covered with the trouble they have wrought.
Let burning coals fall down on them;
In fire and miry pits may they be caught.
May they never rise to life again;
Let slanderers be kept from the land;
Let violent men, who hunt their prey,
Be snared by the disasters they've planned.
I know the Lord is just and good
And he secures justice for the poor;
Upholds the cause of needy souls,
And so deserves our praise forevermore.
Yes surely we will praise your name;
The righteous man will lift up your name.
The upright live their lives for you;
Forevermore with you they'll remain.

Psalm 140 Reflection
The Psalmist is David and he is in real trouble from the plotting of violent people and from their venomous tongues. He prays that God will guard him and punish them, in the confident knowledge that God is for what is right and implacably opposed to evil.
