You have searched me and know me O Lord,

You know when I sit, you know when I rise;

You perceive my thoughts from afar;

My going out and lying down.

You’re familiar with all of my ways;

Before a word is on my tongue,

You know it completely, Lord;

You know it completely, Lord.

You hem me in behind and before;

You have laid your hand upon me.

Such knowledge, too wonderful for me,

Too lofty for me to attain.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go to the heavens, you’re there;

Make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, you’re there,

If I flee cross the bounds of the sea, you are there.

Even there your hand will guide me,

Even there your right hand will hold me fast.

"Surely the darkness will hide me from you,

The light become night all around me,"

Even the darkness isn’t dark to you;

For the night it will shine like day.

You created my inmost being;

Knit me together in my mother's womb.

I’ll praise you for I am fearfully made;

Fearfully and wonderfully made.

When I was formed in the depths of the earth,

Your eyes saw me in that secret place.

All my days ordained for me, were written in your book,

Before one of them came to be.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go to the heavens, you’re there;

Make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, you’re there,

If I flee cross the bounds of the sea, you are there.

Even there your hand will guide me,

Even there your right hand will hold me fast.

(When I awake, I’m still with you God.)

How precious to me are your thoughts O God.

How vast the sum of them all.

Were I to count them, they’d outnumber the sand,

Outnumber the grains of sand.

If only you’d slay the wicked, O God!

Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

They speak of you with evil intent;

They’re taking your name in vain.

Do I not hate those who hate you, O Lord,

Abhor those who rise against you?

I have nothing but hatred for them;

I count them my enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my own heart;

Test me, know my own anxious thoughts.

See if there be an offensive way in me,

And lead me in The Way everlasting.

Where can I go from your Spirit?

Where can I flee from your presence?

If I go to the heavens, you’re there;

Make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, you’re there,

If I flee cross the bounds of the sea, you are there.

Even there your hand will guide me,

Even there your right hand will hold me fast.

(When I awake, I’m still with you)

Psalm 139 Reflection

The Psalm is is concerned with God's all-knowingness, not in an abstract, but in a highly personal way.If God knows everything, he knows me through and through, even my thoughts. He has know me since the day before I was born. If God is present everywhere, no matter where I go he is there. He is always with me. I will align myself with him in the fight against evil. Let him search out and deal with all that is wrong in me.
