By the rivers of Babylon,

We sat down and wept.

There on the poplars we hung our harps,

When we remembered our home in Zion.

For there our captors, they asked us for songs;

Our tormentors demanded songs of joy:

“Sing us one of the songs of Zion,

Of Zion.”

“Sing us one of the songs of Zion,

Of Zion.”

How can we sing the songs of the LORD

Whilst in a foreign land?

If I forget you Jerusalem

May my right hand forget its skill.

May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth

If I don’t remember you.

If I don’t consider Jerusalem,

My highest joy,

My highest joy.

Remember O LORD what the Edomites did,

The day Jerusalem fell.

“Tear it down to its foundations,” they cried.

“Tear it down to the ground.”

O daughter of Babylon doomed to destruction,

Happy is he who repays you;

Who seizes your infants and dashes them

Against the rocks.

For this is what you have done to us,

Done to us.

For this is what you have done to us,

Done to us.
