I rejoiced with those who said to me,

"Let us go to the house of the LORD."

Our feet are standing in your gates,

O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city

that is closely compacted together.

That is where the tribes go up,

The tribes of the LORD,

To praise the name of the LORD

According to the statutes given to Israel.

There the thrones of judgment stand,

The thrones of the house of David,

David, David

I rejoiced with those who said to me,

"Let us go to the house of the LORD."

Our feet are standing in your gates,

O Jerusalem.

Jerusalem is built like a city

That is closely compacted together.

That is where the tribes go up,

The tribes of the LORD,

To praise the name of the LORD

According to the statutes given to Israel.

There the thrones of judgment stand,

The thrones of the house of David.,

David, David

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

“May those who love you be secure.

May there be peace within your walls,

Security within your citadels."

For the sake of my brothers and friends,

I will say, "Peace be within you."

For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,

I will seek your prosperity.

I will seek your prosperity,

I will seek your prosperity,

I will seek your prosperity.

The stirring exhortation of David to pray for the peace of Jerusalem has, of course, a dual application for every follower of Jesus.  We are indeed to pray for Jerusalem, for its safety and its prosperity, and every believer should devote some time to pray for the embattled modern state of Israel.  But we should also be praying for the safety and prosperity of the Church of Jesus Christ.  The history of the tribes of Israel, with their frequent demonstrations of faithlessness and disobedience, and the history of the Church are very similar.  Yet despite the Church’s frequent lapses into lukewarm religiosity and even heresy, the Lord continues to keep her safe and prosper her.  Peace continues to be found within her walls and love and joy continue to manifest in her gatherings.
