Psalm 87 Reflection
City of God
This festival psalm looks forward to the glorious future God has planned for his holy city. Zion (Jerusalem's Temple hill) is to be the focus and capital of the nations. All are included as citizens, even old enemies like the Philistines and nations which have held Israel in bondage like Egypt and Babylonia. The Old Testament sees this triumph largely in material and geographical terms, the New in spiritual.
