I cried out to God for help,
That he might hear me.
And when I was in distress, I cried
And then I sought the Lord.
At night I stretched out my hands,
Without growing weary,
But comfort my soul it had none.
I remembered you, O God,
I groaned, I mused on you.
My Spirit grew faint within me,
And my eyes they wouldn’t close.
I thought about former days;
The years that had long gone by;
Remembered my songs in the night.
I enquired of God,
Will he reject me always?
Has His unfailing love and favour
Vanished for all time?
And have his promises failed;
Is he no longer merciful?
In his anger, is his compassion all gone?
But then I thought
I’d call to mind the deeds of God;
Remembering all your miracles,
Your works and mighty deeds,
For all your ways are holy
There’s none that is great like you,
Redeeming the sons of men.
The waters saw you God
They writhed and trembled.
The clouds poured down their water
And your thunder filled the sky.
Your arrows they flashed back and forth,
Your lightning lit up the world;
The earth it trembled and quaked.
Your way led through the sea,
Through the great waters.
And though you walked the path beside them,
Your footprints were unseen.
Your people were led like a flock,
Through the mighty waters,
By Moses’ and Aaron’s hand.
