Why do you reject us forever O God?
And your anger it smoulders against us,
‘Gainst the sheep of your pasture O Lord.
Remember the people you purchased of old
Your inheritence, you have redeemed.
Mount Zion where you do dwell.
Turn your steps towards these everlasting ruins.
All this destruction
The enemy brought upon the sanctuary.
Your foes roared in the place where you met us.
There they set up their standards and signs.
They behaved like men wielding axes,
To cut through a thicket of trees,
With hatchets and axes,
Smashing the carved panels down
Burning your sanctuary down to the ground
Defiling the place of your name
They burned every place,
Where God was worshipped in the land.
We were given no miraculous signs
And no prophets are left amongst us.
No-one knows how long this will be.
How long will the enemy mock you O God?
Will the foe defile your name forever?
Why do you hold back your right hand?
Take it from the folds of your garment
And, and destroy them.
You O God are my King from of old.
It is you brings salvation to earth.
It was you split the sea by your power,
And broke the heads of the watery monster,
crushing Leviathan,
And gave him as food to the beasts of the desert.
Opened up springs and streams,
You dried up the fast flowing rivers.
The day is yours, also the night
You established the sun and moon.
It was you set the bounds of the earth
You made summer
And you also made the winter.
Lord remember how the enemy mocks,
How the foolish revile your name.
Don’t hand over the life of your dove,
To wild beasts. Do not forget
The lives of the afflicted forever.
Have regard for your covenant,
For violence fills up the whole earth.
Don’t let the oppressed retreat in disgrace
May the poor and needy praise your name.
Rise up O God and defend your cause,
Remember how fools mock you all day long.
Do not ignore their clamour.
Their uproar, rises up continually.
