Psalm 73: O surely God is good to Israel

Jeff Lowe: Lead vocal, synth, concertina, bass, drums
Paul Bellingham: piano
O surely God is good to Israel,
To those who are the pure in heart,
But as for me my feet had almost slipped.
For I had nearly lost my foothold,
In envying the arrogant,
When I did see the wicked prospering.
They have no struggles;
Their bodies are healthy and strong.
They're free from burdens
That are common to man;
They're not plagued by illness,
Their pride is the necklace they wear.
They’re clothed with violence;
From their callous hearts comes iniquity.
Their evil boasts they know no limit,
They scoff and speak in arrogance,
With malice threaten people to oppress.
Their mouths lay claim to the heavens above them,
Their tongues possess the earth below.
Therefore the people turn and join with them.
They follow their teaching;
They gladly embrace all their ways.
Say “How can God Most High
Find out what we do?
Does He have knowledge
And is He always aware?”
This is the wicked’s way;
Always at ease as they pile up their wealth.
Surely in vain my heart I’ve kept pure;
In vain my hands have been innocent,
Yet all day long I’m punished and I’m plagued.
But if I let myself speak plainly,
You children’s faith would have been destroyed.
To understand all this confuses me.
Till I went to God’s sanctuary,
Where I saw their destiny’s end.
For You Lord have placed them
Upon slippery ground;
They’re cut down in ruin
And then they are suddenly destroyed;
Swept off by terrors!
As a dream when one awakes,
So Lord when You arise,
You’ll despise them as fantasies.
And when my heart was grieved, embittered,
Then I was senseless and ignorant,
And I was like a beast before You Lord.
Yet Lord, my God You’re always with me;
You hold me fast by Your right hand;
Your counsel guides my path right up to heaven.
In heaven or on earth Lord,
There’s nothing I want only You.
My flesh it may fail me
And my heart fail too;
But God is my portion
And all of my strength in in Him.
And this is forever;
My portion for ever and ever.
Those who are far from You will perish;
You will destroy all faithless men,
But as for me it’s good to be near God.
For I have made The Lord my refuge;
The Sovereign Lord my fortress is,
And I will tell of all the deeds You’ve done!
In heaven or on earth Lord,
There’s nothing I want only You.
My flesh it may fail me
And my heart fail too;
But God is my portion
And all of my strength in in Him.
And this is forever;
My portion for ever and ever.
