Psalm 72: Teach the King your justice

Listen on Spotify, Amazon or Apple Music
Teach the king your justice
And share with him your righteousness,
So he’ll rule men justly
And govern the oppressed with love.
May the land enjoy prosperity
And the hills the fruits of righteousness;
May the king judge fairly,
Defeat oppressors help the lost.
May your people serve you,
As long as sun and moon endure;
Through all generations;
For ages and times to come.
May the king be like a shower of rain,
Falling on the earth and fields of grass.
In his days the righteous
Will flourish and in peace abound.
He will rule from sea to sea,
From river to the coast, through all the earth.
Desert folk bow to him,
His enemies they lick the dust.
Kings from distant shores bring tribute;
Bring their costly gifts and offerings.
All kings bow before him,
For all the nations shall serve him.
When the needy cry out,
When those who have no-one cry for help,
He’ll take pity on them,
And save the needy from their death.
He’ll rescue them from harm and violence;
Save the weak and needy soul from death,
For their blood is precious,
So precious are their lives to him.
May fine gold be given him;
And may his life be long and blessed by God.
May the people pray for him
And pour out blessing all day long.
Let ripe corn abound throughout the land *
May it sway upon the tops of hills.
His name lasts forever;
All nations will be blessed through him.
Praise be to the Lord our God;
Praise be to the God of Israel.
For his name is glorious
And he alone does marvellous deeds.
Let us praise his name most glorious
May his glory fill the whole of earth.
These the prayers of David
Are ended so let’s say Amen.
Amen, amen, amen
Praise the Lord our God and say Amen.
Amen amen amen
Come praise the Lord and say Amen.

Psalm 72 Reflection
The title ‘for Solomon’ indicates the King in question. It seems to be in celebration of a coronation or an anniversary. Like Psalm 21 it is certainly a fitting one for Solomon’s reign: Israel’s golden age of peace, prosperity and power. But it also looks beyond it to the perfect ideal: and endless reign over the entire world.: a rule of God like justice and righteousness; a time of unequaled fruitfulness.
