O listen to my prayer O God,

And Lord do not ignore my urgent plea.

Hear me and answer me;

My thoughts they trouble me.

I'm distraught by the enemy;

What he says and the threats he makes to me.

For they bring suff'ring down on me;

Their anger it assails me.

My heart's in anguish within me,

The terrors of death they fall on me.

Fear and trembling assail me

And horror overwhelms me.

O that I had the wings of a dove,

Then I'd fly far away and be at rest,

And in the desert I would stay

And shelter from the raging storm.

O Lord confuse the wicked's words,

For I have seen the city torn by strife.

They prowl the city walls by day,

Bring malice and abuse by night.

Threats and lies never leave its streets;

In the city destructive forces rage.

So Lord confound the wicked's tongues

For all their violent acts and wrongs.

So If it was an enemy,

If he insulted me I could endure.

If a foe rose up to fight,

Then I could shield myself and hide.

But it's you, a man like myself;

My companion and my close friend of years.

In fellowship we walked about,

Together we worshipped God.

Let death surprise my enemy,

Let them go down alive to meet the dead:

Evil lodges among them

But as for me I'll call to God.

The LORD saves when he hears my voice,

When I cry out in anguish day and night.

He rescues me and I'm not harmed,

Though battles may rage all around.

He rescues me and I'm not harmed,

Though battles may rage all around,

And many do appose me.

But God who is enthroned from old,

Who doesn’t change will hear and humble them.

Because they have no fear of God,

And violate his covenant.

My companion attacks his friends,

Smooth like butter, his talk, like soothing oil.

His words they are like drawn out swords

And war it is in his heart.

Cast all your cares upon the Lord,

And then he will sustain you all your days.

The righteous man will not be lost,

But God will bring the wicked down.

The deceitful and bloodthirsty

They will scarcely live out but half their days.

And in the pit they will decay,

But as for me I’ll trust in you.
