Psalm 50: The Mighty One, God the LORD speaks out

Listen on Spotify, Amazon or Apple Music
The Mighty One, God, the LORD,
Speaks out to the earth,
From the rising to the setting sun,
His beauty shines forth.
Our God will not be silent;
His fire devours all;
Around him a tempest does rage.
He summons the heavens above,
His goodness he shows.
He judges his people:
Righteous judgements bestows.
“Gather to me my precious ones,
Those promised to me,
For they’ve made a covenant with me.”
“My people, I would speak with you;
To your God take heed.
Of you offerings and sacrifice,
I have no great need;
The bull from your stall or
The goat from your pen,
For all of these creatures are mine.
Every bird in the mountains;
All that forest can yield;
The cattle on a thousand hills;
And the beasts of the field.
And if I were to grow hungry
I would not tell you,
For all the whole earth it is mine.
Do I eat the flesh of bulls,
Of goats drink their blood?
Yet you can bring your thanks to God,
Keeping faith as you should.
Then when you’re in trouble,
And call on my name.
I’ll save you and you’ll honour me.”
But to they who are wicked, God says:
“What right have you,
To take my laws upon your lips,
Reciting what’s true?
For You hate my instructions,
Cast my words aside;
When you see a thief, you join in;
Throw in your lot with adulterers;
Let your tongue mouth deceit,
Speaking lies against brothers
And slanders repeat.
And you thought I would keep silent,
That I was like you,
But I’ll accuse you to your face.”
So consider all those of you,
Your God would forget,
He may tear you to pieces,
And none pay your debt.
But you who give thanks to him
And sacrifice praise;
God will show salvation to You.
