Psalm 39: I said I will watch my ways

I said, “I will watch my ways
And keep my tongue from sin;
Put a muzzle on my mouth
As long as the wicked are near me.”
But when I was silent and still,
Not even saying anything good,
Then my anguish increased;
My heart it grew hot within me.
Then as I meditated, the fire burned,
And I spoke out with my tongue:
“O show me, LORD, the number of my days.
Let me know how fleeting my life;
My days are a mere hands breadth;
The span of years is nothing but a breath.
And as men go to and fro,
And rush about making a show
Their lives seem secure but they are just like a phantom.
And vainly they heap up wealth,
Not knowing where it should go
Or who will inherit it when they are dead and gone.
“But now, O Lord, what do I look for?
My hope it is in you:
Lord save me and don’t make me the scorn of fools.
Save me from transgression Lord,
For it’s you who’s in control,
Though I was dumb
And wouldn’t open my mouth.”
Remove your scourge from me;
I am overcome by you,
With the blow of your hand you discipline men who’re sinners.
And you consume their wealth,
Like moth consuming cloth,
For surely man’s life to you is but a breath.
““LORD hear my prayer, listen to my cry,
And don’t turn deaf ears to me,
For I am like a stranger in this place.
Look from me now and set me free
For it’s you whose in control.
Before I die and life it is no more.”
