Psalm 30: I will exalt you O LORD my God

I will exalt you, O LORD my God,
You lifted me out of the depths.
You cared for me LORD, would not allow,
My foes to rejoice over me.
O LORD, when I called, you healed me;
Brought my soul up from the grave;
You spared me O LORD;
Saved me from out of the pit.
Sing to the LORD, all you his saints,
Give praises to his holy name.
For whilst his anger lasts but a moment,
His favour will last all your life.
Sadness and weeping may tarry,
But only remain for a night;
Rejoicing then comes,
Fresh with the new morning light.
When I felt secure, I said to myself,
Shaken I never will be.
As a strong mountain, I did stand firm,
For you showed your favour to me.
But then when you hid your face from me,
Then I was filled with dismay.
I called out to you,
Then I cried out for your mercy.
What gain O LORD, is there in death;
If I should go down to the pit.
Will the dust praise you or speak of your truth,
O gracious LORD be my help:
You’ve turned all my wailing to dancing,
Removed the sackcloth from me.
You’ve clothed me with joy,
Made my heart sing for you.
O LORD my God, I’ll give you praise,
I’ll praise you as long as I live.
O LORD my God, I give you praise,
Forever my thanks I will give.
You’ve turned my wailing to dancing,
Removed the sackcloth from me.
You’ve clothed me with joy,
Made my heart sing for you.
I cannot be silent.

Psalm 30 Reflection
David wrote this psalm of praise for the dedication of the temple. Three thousand years on, the Church, his faithful people, can still sing this psalm of praise as we dedicate of our lives to his service, because of the salvation that he has brought about. We are forever thankful that “his anger lasts only a moment but his favour lasts a lifetime”. It is absolutely right that we should praise him and it is impossible for the dust of the earth to join in. What form should this praise take? Finally the psalmist tells us: “You’ve turned my wailing to dancing, made my heart sing. I cannot be silent!”
