The Miraculous Harvest

There was a star all in the east
which shed a cheerful ray
In to King Herod’s bed chamber
And where King Herod lay
The wise men, they did soon espy it
And they told the king on high
That a princely, babe was born that night
No king could ever destroy
Then Herod sent for his armed men
Said ready then they should be
All children under two years old
shall be slayed oh they shall be.
Then Jesus, aye and Joseph too
And Mary, that was so pure
Travelled into old Egypt
As you will find most sure
They travelled further, further on
The weather it being so warm
Until they met a husbandman
A sowing of his corn
God speed thy work; then Jesus said
Go fetch thy ox and wain
And carry home the ripened corn,
And harvest all your grain.
And if anyone should ask of you
And enquire of me alone
Tell them ;jesus passed me by’
Just as the seeds were sown.
After that came Herod’s men
So furious was their cry
Enquiring of the husbandman
Whether Jesus had passed by.
The truth it must be spoken well
The truth it must be told
For i saw Jesus passing by
Just as my seeds were sown.
And as you see it ripened well
And some lies on my wain
Ready to fetch and carry back
Into my barns again
The captain said to his armed man
Your labour and mine’s in vain.
It’s full three quarters of a year
since he planted this grain.
So Herod, he was well deceived
By the work of God’s own hand
No further did he then proceed
Into the holy land.
